The four day festival, which kicks off Thursday evening, doesn’t have any bands that would be considered widely known. Big names cost big bucks, and Culturefest operates on a shoestring budget with a small staff with big ideas.

“But if you’ve been to Culturefest,” McKinney said. “You know you’re getting quality.”

She was proud of this year’s festival lineup, which has some international flavor with the Mystic Warriors from Peru, Latin and Appalachian music fusion band Appalatin, and West African drum group Africa Unplugged.
